Poetic Devices
- repetition: repeating words or phrases to make an idea clearer or to emphasize significance
- alliteration: a literary device where two or more words in a phrase or line of poetry share the same beginning sound
- Example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
- personification: a form of figurative language in which something that is not human is given human characteristics or abilities
- Example: The leaves danced across the yard.
- metaphor: comparing two unlike things without using "like" or "as"
- Example: Juliet is the sun. (In this example, Romeo is comparing Juliet to the sun to emphasize how much she means to him and to signify that she is the light in his life.)
